Project Antigone – Using drama in schools to address violence against women

Antigone is an Erasmus project involving seven partners from Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Norway, Serbia, Sweden and Hungary. The partners include experts in the field of violence against women, psychologists, drama educators, university lecturers as well as actors and theater directors. In Sweden, RealStars is a project partner.

As part of the project high school and middle school teachers in all participating countries will, in spring 2022, gain access to and be introduced to Antigone’s specially developed materials. The materials include value-and drama exercises and are aimed at teachers across various subjects who want to engage their students in discussing and preventing violence against women. The handbook provides teachers with up to date and fact checked information on gender based violence, including insights into the impact of the pandemic on domestic violence. It also contains sections that guide teachers on how to support students who may have experienced violence and offers advice for students who have been exposed to violence or know someone who has.The materials for the handbook were developed during 2021. During the spring of 2022 we will organize workshops in all participating countries to instruct teachers in how to use the materials and methods, followed by classroom trials. As part of the project’s coordination and mutual learning efforts, the Swedish team traveled to Hungary.

An expected outcome is that teachers will feel confident addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in the classroom. Students, in turn, will gain insights into the root causes of violence against women such as stereotypes, norms and gender inequality and will be encouraged to recognize their role in combating gender-based violence.

RealStars asked project manager Ninna Mörner about what felt especially valuable:

All project partners met in Budapest for four days in October. We discussed the different conditions in each country for addressing and combating violence against women. It is always enlightening to listen and learn from each other, not just over Zoom. Additionally, we tested many drama exercises together which fostered cohesion. It was wonderful that this could happen even during the pandemic.
