The evening features two important and engaging presentations by RealStars contributor Robert Schenck and survivor Tekla Glaser, as well as opportunities to get involved in the fight for a world free from sexual exploitation. Light refreshments will be provided.
About the Presentations:
Robert Schenck has been a RealStars contributor for 10 years, reviewing over 30 books, films, and plays. Malin Roux Johansson, RealStars’ Secretary-General, will engage in a dialogue with Robert about his work with RealStars and the role of culture in shaping public understanding of prostitution.
Recently, Robert shared his thoughts on the film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande:
“Leo is clearly portrayed as a well-functioning, attractive young man who is simply ‘doing his job,’ which he claims to enjoy. The inevitable consequences and trauma for Leo as a result of prostitution receive no attention in the film, nor does the guilt of the ‘client’ (Nancy) in this context. That the gender roles are reversed compared to the norm makes no difference—the power dynamics remain.”

Tekla Glaser interned with RealStars during the fall semester of 2023 and has personal experience with prostitution. At the meeting, she will share her story of being drawn into a destructive world of prostitution and heavy drug use at the age of 18, and how she became a survivor nine years later. Here is an excerpt from a text Tekla wrote on RealStars’ blog:
“Even though I didn’t initially feel coerced, prostitution quickly became a compulsion—something I had to do to avoid horrific withdrawal symptoms and, at times, to afford food and rent. The clients took advantage of my vulnerability, and the regulars knew I was addicted. I often used heroin in their presence to be as numb as possible during the assaults. They should have realized I wasn’t there because I thought it was a great experience.”

About the Presentations:
The evening begins with a film about sugar dating, followed by two members of the board sharing their expertise:
- Jenny Österberg will discuss what sexual exploitation can look like, how violence manifests and is perceived among young people, and examples from the report “Girls Exposed to Prostitution and Exploitation: On Young People’s Experiences, Support, and Psychological Treatment.”
- Julia Mo Eriksson will address the lack of victim status in cases of “purchase of sexual services” and the legal consequences this has.
